The Consistency Report – Volume 6
Your Friday dose of fitness, mindset, and lifestyle takeaways to help you stay dialed in.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is this: you can go fast alone, but you’ll go further with help.
And I've struggled with it. I tend to be a lone wolf. Not because I necessarily want to be or think it's best. It's just my default.
Community matters — whether it’s a lifting partner, a coach, or just friends who push you to be better. If you’ve got people around you who encourage you to keep showing up, you’re already ahead of the game.
The trouble is, it's harder than ever to make that happen.
But remember, almost everyone is shy. The other person is waiting for you to make the move. Make it.
Here is what I have for you this week.
Fitness
This week’s reminder: get your blood work done.
I don’t have any fancy partnerships or affiliate links to drop here — I just believe it’s smart. I get mine done yearly with my regular doctor to keep tabs on cholesterol, triglycerides, all the usual stuff. But recently, I dug a little deeper with a more detailed panel that looked at hormones, vitamins, minerals, and more.
Everything looked good overall, but it turns out I’m really low in Vitamin D. An easy fix, but I wouldn’t have known otherwise. So yeah, take your training and health seriously enough to keep an eye on what’s happening under the hood.
Mindset
Apply common sense.
Whenever I’m doing something — or thinking about doing something — I try to take a step back and ask: does this actually make sense?
A great example is morning routines.
They blew up in the entrepreneurial world years ago — before Ashton Hall made them trendy again on social media.
About ten years ago, the big idea was that a hyper-structured morning routine was the key to success. I bought into it for a while. But waking up earlier than you need to (cutting into sleep) just to squeeze in extra meditating, journaling, sauna, a cold plunge, and who knows what else before you do anything productive? That doesn’t make sense.
The same thing goes for your day-to-day. Look at your habits. Look at your training. Are you doing anything that doesn’t pass the common-sense test? Fix it.
A good way to tell if something makes sense or not is how easy (or difficult) it is to explain.
What I’ve Been Into
Mid-2000s Fitness Culture
I’ve been on a nostalgia kick lately — thinking about mid-2000s bodybuilding and fitness. I even wrote an article about it this week: Train Like It’s 2005: Why Old-School Bodybuilding Still Works.
I started lifting in 2005 when I was in 8th grade. It’s wild to think it’s been 20 years. Back then, lifting weights wasn’t popular. I had maybe 2-3 friends in high school who lifted. But a few years later, when I was in college, it started to catch on — probably because of social media. It made lifting look cool. Now, you see groups of high school kids hitting the gym together all the time. I love it.
Coffee
It’s the little pleasures in life. A good cup of coffee in the morning is hard to beat. Enough said.
This Week’s Podcast Episodes
I dropped two episodes this week:
🎙️ Sometimes You Gotta Be a Little Crazy in the Gym – Ep. 513
→ A real talk episode with Derek about why “normal” training doesn’t always cut it — sometimes you have to bring a bit of crazy to make progress.
🎙️ How to Look Like a Bodybuilder and Perform Like an Athlete – Ep. 512
→ I break down what true hybrid training looks like and how to chase both aesthetics and performance at the same time.
Final Thought
If you take anything from today’s newsletter, let it be this: sometimes all you need is a good friend to chat with, a solid cup of coffee, and enough common sense to know when to skip the cold plunge and just get to work.
Stay consistent. See you next week.
