The Consistency Report – Volume 19

Your Monday dose of fitness, mindset, and lifestyle takeaways to keep you dialed in.

I want to talk about bad moods. Yes, I have them too.

Some days you just wake up off. You’re tired, unmotivated, maybe a little annoyed for no real reason. It happens to everyone. The problem isn’t having a bad mood; it’s letting it take over the whole day.

When you’re in one, the best move is to stay consistent. Stick to your routine. Lean on your habits. Don’t wait to “feel” better before doing the things that make you feel better.

Go train. Eat a solid meal. Take a walk. Check off a small task. One or two wins are usually all it takes to pull yourself back on track.

You can’t always control how you feel, but you can control what you do. And what you do shapes how you feel moving forward.

Here is what I have for you this week.

Fitness

Lead in Protein Powder?

You might’ve seen the recent Consumer Reports article claiming that many protein powders and shakes contain high levels of lead and other heavy metals. Sounds scary, right? But here’s the context most headlines skip.

Yes, trace amounts of heavy metals can show up in all kinds of foods—protein powders, spinach, rice, even root vegetables. It’s not that supplement companies are secretly dumping lead into your shake. These elements exist naturally in soil and water, and plants absorb them as they grow.

When Consumer Reports tested dozens of protein powders, they found some with detectable levels of lead, cadmium, and arsenic, but the amounts were still far below what health agencies consider dangerous. To put it in perspective, you’d have to drink multiple servings of the “worst” products every day for years before approaching anything remotely concerning.

Another important detail: dairy-based proteins like whey and casein tend to be much lower in these minerals than plant-based proteins (especially those made from rice or pea sources). That’s because plants absorb more from the soil, while milk proteins come from animals that have already filtered out much of it.

If you’re buying from reputable brands, you’re fine because they routinely test for contaminants and publish third-party results.

So should you worry? Not really. The risk of not getting enough protein far outweighs the trace mineral content of a quality powder. Focus on hitting your daily protein goal consistently.

Here’s the takeaway:
*Don’t fall for fear-based headlines.
*Buy from reputable brands.
* Remember that dosage matters—trace doesn’t mean dangerous.

Consistency in your nutrition will do far more for your health than avoiding imaginary dangers ever will.

Mindset

High Expectations, Low Assumptions

Have high expectations for yourself and no expectations for anyone else.

You can only control your own effort, discipline, and response. Don’t waste energy expecting people to think, act, or care the same way you do.

Most of us get this backward: we judge others by their actions but judge ourselves by our intentions. Psychologists call this the fundamental attribution error: we assume our mistakes come from circumstance, while others’ mistakes come from character.

Example: You’re late because traffic was bad. Someone else is late because they’re irresponsible.

Flip that script. Hold yourself to a higher standard.

What I’m Into

Scary Movies
With Halloween this week, I’ve been watching a few classics: Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th. I don’t know, those old-school suspense and grainy film looks somehow make everything creepier. I’ll probably throw on Scream this week, too.

Whiskey
I don’t drink much, but when I do, I like a glass of whiskey. Lately it’s been Basil Hayden and Willett—both smooth, a little bite, but easy to sip. It’s more of a weekend ritual than a habit.

This Week’s Podcast

Only one episode last week:

🎙 Alex Viada — What It Really Means to Be a Hybrid Athlete | EP 532
Alex has been talking about hybrid training for over a decade, long before it was a social media trend. We dig into what’s fueling the hybrid boom, how his views have evolved, and why most people still get it wrong.

Final Thought

Bad moods come and go, but consistency sticks.
The secret is learning to act the same, regardless of how you feel.
